For the best-quality printed text on your StyleWriter®, Apple recommends that you use the Times® and Helvetica® fonts instead of the New York and Geneva fonts. (You received TrueType® versions of Times and Helvetica with your printer.) Although New York is similar in appearance to Times, and Geneva is similar to Helvetica, New York and Geneva are fixed-size (bitmapped) fonts and will not produce the same sharp, clean results when printed on the StyleWriter.
MACINTOSH COMPUTERS WITH 1 MB OF RAM
If you are using your StyleWriter with a Macintosh® that has 1 MB of random access memory (RAM), you may encounter memory problems. For example, you may not be able to install the software that came with the printer; or, once the software is installed, you may notice that some applications perform poorly or print text that looks ragged. If this happens, try these remedies:
• If you have MultiFinder on, turn it off. (Choose Set Startup from the Special menu, click Finder, then restart your computer.)
• Open the Control Panel and make sure the RAM cache is turned off.
• If you have a number of init files on your Macintosh, remove some of them. (You’ll find them inside your System Folder.)
• Add more RAM to your Macintosh. (See your authorized Apple dealer.)
APPLE NETWORK PRODUCTS
Once you have installed your StyleWriter software, if you need to install AppleTalk® Internet, EtherTalk®, or TokenTalk, check the version number of the Network Products Installer (NPI) disk. (Click the disk icon to select it and choose Get Info from the File menu. The version information appears in the lower half of the Get Info box.) It is important that you use version 1.3 or later. Earlier versions of the NPI will replace your Chooser with an older, incompatible one. If you do not have NPI version 1.3 or later, see your authorized Apple dealer for an upgrade.
APPLICATION NOTES
Microsoft Word -- If you are using StyleWriter with Microsoft Word, turn on the Fractional Widths option in the Page Setup dialog box for the best text spacing.
Microsoft PowerPoint -- version 2.01 may not work correctly with TrueType fonts. If you experience this problem, please call Microsoft Technical Support at 1-206-454-2030.
Claris MacWrite II -- Type sizes larger than 127 points will appear smaller than specified on your screen. This will be fixed in a future Claris product release. For more information, contact Claris Technical Support at (408) 727-9024.
Adobe Type Manager (ATM) -- If you use ATM, you may have ATM versions of the TrueType fonts Helvetica, Times, Courier, and Symbol that came with your StyleWriter. In this case the Macintosh and the printer will use the TrueType fonts instead of the ATM fonts. If you prefer the ATM versions, you can use Font/DA Mover to remove the TrueType fonts from your system. (When you install the StyleWriter software, the Installer places Font/DA Mover version 4.1 inside the System Folder on your Macintosh. Be sure to use this version of the Font/DA Mover.)
IMAGE UTILITY CHANGES
If you have documents containing images scanned at 300 dots per inch (dpi), you can use the Image Utility to convert them to 360 dpi and take full advantage of the StyleWriter’s 360 dpi printing capability. When you open the Image Utility and choose the Open command from the File menu, the dialog box that appears looks different from the one shown in the manual. Instead of a button labeled Open you see a Convert button. Click Convert to open and convert your document.
There is also a check box at the bottom of the dialog box. If you want to open a document but do not want to convert it to 360 dpi, click the check box to make the X disappear. The button labeled Convert changes to Open. To open the document, click Open.
Large scanned documents can take up a lot of memory. If a document you have converted appears blank on your screen, turn MultiFinder off and try again to convert the document.
NEW PRINTER SOFTWARE FOR YOUR PRINTERS
If you will be using other printers on your Macintosh, you should update the printer software for those printers. The Macintosh Printing Tools disk which comes with your StyleWriter contains new versions of the printer drivers for:
- ImageWriter® and ImageWriter LQ
- Personal LaserWriter® SC and LaserWriter II SC
- Personal LaserWriter NT, LaserWriter IINT, LaserWriter IINTX, and other PostScript® devices
These updated drivers have been enhanced to take full advantage of the TrueType fonts provided with your StyleWriter. To install the updated software, insert the StyleWriter Installation disk. Open the Installer, click Customize, and follow the instructions on the screen to update your printer software. (Do not simply drag the printer driver to your System Folder.)
NOTE -- If you install the new Personal LaserWriter SC printer driver, and you are using a shared PostScript® device (such as the LaserWriter IINTX), or if you plan to use additional TrueType fonts beyond the Helvetica, Times, Courier, and Symbol fonts, then you should upgrade your LaserWriter driver at the same time to avoid printing errors when printing to the shared PostScript printer.
IMPORTANT -- If you update your LaserWriter driver for use with a shared PostScript device, everyone who uses the same printer must upgrade as well. Otherwise, you will find yourselves reinitializing the printer often.
